Because all of the Mountain High Maps masks are bitmapped, the quality of line may degrade if you reduce their size by any substantial amount. To limit the amount of degradation of line when you change the size of a mask, follow this procedure:
1. Change the image mode to grayscale (“Mode menu”).
2. Choose “Image Size…” from the “Image” menu to change the size of your image.
3. Choose “Map” > “Threshold…” from the “Image” menu. The value you put in the “Threshold Level” field depends upon the amount you have altered the image size, so you will need to experiment to get the best line (make sure “Preview” is checked).
If you intend using several masks for the same map, make sure you apply exactly the same values to all of them.
Enlarging the size of a mask
When you enlarge a mask, the apparent number of pixels making up a line remains the same, even though you may not have changed the image resolution. You can smooth out the lines on a mask by doing the following:
1. Choose “Image Size…” from the “Image” menu to change the size of your mask.
2. Change the image mode to grayscale.
3. Choose “Noise” > “Median…” from the “Filter” menu. Enter a radius value of one pixel to start with – increase the value if you need the line to be smoother.
If you intend using several masks for the same map, make sure you apply exactly the same values to all of them.
